Two competitions running in the community this week. One for photography with the theme ‘leaves’, and one for art (including AI art) on the theme ‘Discover Earth’.

A scientist (who was also an amateur beekeeper) was cleaning out a hive that had a wax worm infestation. She then noticed the worms had chewed holes inΒ her plastic bags, and properly digested the plastic. We now know this species creates enzymes that could revolutionise the cleanup & recycling of plastic waste. π Link
Mussels create a type of sticky protein that helps them cling to rocks in extreme conditions. We’ve learned that this protein can be synthesised for a wide range of uses. One new use is for skin grafts, replacing scarring-causing stitches. π Link
