On the 23rd December, just in time for Christmas, NASA releases a photo brought back by Apollo 17. ‘Blue marble’ became the most widely published photo in media history. What was it that gave this picture its unique aura?
At the moment the shot was taken, the flight path of the spaceship is just crossing the imaginary line joining the Sun and the Earth. The Sun is therefore directly behind the spaceship, so that the daylight side of the Earth is fully illuminated. The Sun’s light floods the entire disc of the Earth, almost without any shadowy twilight zones. The planet is a shimmering blue. It is the atmosphere which appears of the sunlight. A soft blue veil is draped over the land masses. The oceans shine a deeper blue. Large areas of the Indian Ocean and of the southern Atlantic are visible. Giant bands of white clouds swirl around the West Wind Drift. The dynamics of the great wind systems can be seen, suggesting the ultimate forces behind them – the oceanic currents and the power of the Earth’s revolution.
The South Pole is tilted towards the Sun. The glaciers and ice shelf of Antarctica lie dazzling white in the sunlight, encircled by cyclones. The whole of Africa, the cradle of humanity, is in view, as well as – delta and Sinai, the Arabian peninsula and the eastern Mediterranean, centres of early advanced civilisations. Clouds are building up in towers at the Equator, obscuring the surface of the Earth. The green of the tropical rainforest belt shows through only patchily. Areas of high and low pressure alternate. The atmosphere over the Sahara and the Sahel to the north, and over the Kalahari to the south, is in this colour, where the molecules of air reflect the blue spectrum at the top edge of the globe – the Nile cloudless; the warm, earthy colour tones of the deserts, red-yellow-brown, show through strongly. The life-supporting mantle of air around the Earth looks transparent and vanishingly thin, the sleeve of vegetation like soft down.
No artefact anywhere which might betray the existence of humankind. Rather, it is the Earth’s biosphere which distinguishes it from all other stars, which makes it unique. The blue planet floats through this deep black void of endless space. Her long, slow motion strengthens the impression of dream-like beauty, of absolute solitude and singularity, and – not least – of great vulnerability. Nowhere else in space is there a trace of life. Only one Earth. We are alone.

How I scaled my e-commerce business to $9,344,047 in sales in just over 1 year at 20 years old… then lost it all, so you don’t have to…
Here are the hard lessons I learned on this journey.
A 🧵
@evanjohansen_ on Twitter, How I Scaled My E-Commer…
I am sitting right now in a coffee shop writing this, sipping a hot drip coffee reflecting on how things got to this point.
@evanjohansen_ on Twitter, How I Scaled My E-Commer…
Going to preface this by sharing that this journey was absolutely wild. I went from doing $0 to $2,000,000 / month in 3 months, then back almost down to nothing in such a short amount of time. Still taking inventory of the lessons.
@evanjohansen_ on Twitter, How I Scaled My E-Commer…
During this time I was 19 years old turning 20 years old, and I did not know how to interpret this change. Below is a combination of both the business / personal lessons.
@evanjohansen_ on Twitter, How I Scaled My E-Commer…
My goal with this is to share some of the mistakes I have made, so others don’t go through what I did.
@evanjohansen_ on Twitter, How I Scaled My E-Commer…
These lessons are in no particular order. I also sprinkle some book recommendations that have helped me identify some of these problems / lessons, and navigate them for the future.

KNOW YOUR NUMBERS
Most entrepreneurs do what most will call “bank balance accounting”.
Understand your P&L, cash flow statement, Balance Sheet.
You may be rolling your eyes right now by how simple this is, but looking at your bank balance or ROAS is not the way…
@evanjohansen_ on Twitter, How I Scaled My E-Commer…
The mistake I made here was that I was so naively optimistic and rarely took the time to comb over the REAL financial statements.
I didn’t realize the business was losing so much.

PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR OPEX
Operating expenses can sneak up so quickly on you. This software here, this subscription there.
Don’t let it.
“It’s only when the tide goes out that you learn who has been swimming naked.”
@evanjohansen_ on Twitter, How I Scaled My E-Commer…
The mistake I made was that I let our opex get way too high relative to our revenue. When revenue dropped, I did not cut opex fast enough, until it hurt.

@TaylorHoliday 3. NEVER DO 50/50 PARTNERSHIPS
Do you every see 2 CEOs of any major companies?
That’s right, it’s because it doesn’t work.
When entering a partnership, ask yourself:
– What experience does each person bring to the table?
– What capital does each person bring to the table?
@evanjohansen_ on Twitter, How I Scaled My E-Commer…
@TaylorHoliday My mistake was something I will never make again.
In my biz partnership but there was no clear chain of command. Who has final say.
When it came to making big decisions, no one stood up because this was not clearly defined beforehand.

@TaylorHoliday 4. HIRE SLOW, FIRE FAST
I made the mistake of hiring on the wrong people, or hiring the right people and having them in the wrong seat.
What you want:
– Right Person
– Right SeatYou could have an A-Player but they are taking on a role that is the wrong seat for them.
@evanjohansen_ on Twitter, How I Scaled My E-Commer…
@TaylorHoliday My mistake here was that I hired some of the wrong people.
I unfortunately paid the hefty 6-figure price for this. Money, energy and time down the drain.

At age 24 Amazon let me manage 2500 employees and a $50,000,000 business unit
I learned that leadership at scale is simply about following this one framework
This is going to make you and I hundreds of millions of dollars
@jordan_ross_8F on Twitter, At Age 24 Amazon Let Me…
Culture is what your people say and do when you are not around
Becoming a master of influencing the behavior of others = becoming a master of culture
There are 3 pillars every leader should use in their language to crush influence
Values
MVP
Heuristics
@jordan_ross_8F on Twitter, At Age 24 Amazon Let Me…
values are the 5-10 things your company prioritizes as ‘must haves’
They are non negotiables
Individually, they aren’t unique
Together, they create a unique DNA called ‘your company’
https://t.co/5hloDZs133
@jordan_ross_8F on Twitter, At Age 24 Amazon Let Me…
Heuristics are a simple set of rules that drive complex behaviors
In nature, heuristics are what enable ants to build massive ant farms or bees to build huge bee hives
We want to create these in our agency to build something well beyond ourselves
https://t.co/uF7hXnvoB2
@jordan_ross_8F on Twitter, At Age 24 Amazon Let Me…
MVP= mission, vision, purpose
The why behind the organization
Everyone, especially now, wants to strive for something more than a paycheck
Not having this in your business will make you obsolete real quick
https://t.co/MQ8aPnLX1P
@jordan_ross_8F on Twitter, At Age 24 Amazon Let Me…
once you have these, the KEY is knowing how to use them
Here are the 4 ways you should be using them
@jordan_ross_8F on Twitter, At Age 24 Amazon Let Me…
1- In feedback
Dont tell someone how they can improve
tell them how they can improve using the values/heuristics
@jordan_ross_8F on Twitter, At Age 24 Amazon Let Me…
“Hey name, you continue to point out problems in our operation without proposing a solution. Remember, ownership is one of our key values. An owner in this case would propose a solution with each problem they identify”
@jordan_ross_8F on Twitter, At Age 24 Amazon Let Me…
2- In your praise/shout outs
in 1 on 1s, on the fly, in all hands, in meetings
“I wanted to give a big shout out to Kelsie. Shes been displaying a lot of bias for action this quarter and was able to optimize our clients email campaign to net a $10,000 return. Great jobs Kels!”
@jordan_ross_8F on Twitter, At Age 24 Amazon Let Me…
Here is an example of how I implemented this with a client last month
https://t.co/PU5zrKR0GG
@jordan_ross_8F on Twitter, At Age 24 Amazon Let Me…
3- For inspiration
in 1 on 1s, in all hands, in meetings
“remember, the goal of 8F is the change the way the world works. If were going to do that, we MUST, be world class. Im going to continue to push you to be your best until we get there.”
https://t.co/JqSWgOECGX
@jordan_ross_8F on Twitter, At Age 24 Amazon Let Me…
4- as a reminder on a weekly basis
start of or end of meetings, mid convos, really anytime you can mention
“were 40% of the way on our goal to help 1000 agencies. Lets keep pushing team!”
@jordan_ross_8F on Twitter, At Age 24 Amazon Let Me…
Together, when said consistently over time, these change behavior
It must become a priority of yours as a leader to build this as a habit if you have more than 3 employees on your team
@jordan_ross_8F on Twitter, At Age 24 Amazon Let Me…
Here is a training I made breaking down this whole concept
https://t.co/y9Q6Ja5F13
